Which Christmas Lights Should I Buy?

Very Merry offer a wide range of Christmas Fairy Lights for you to choose from. Our main styles are String, Cluster, Icicle and Curtain. This blogpost aims to break down our different types of lights as well as the length/size needed to achieve your desired look.

What Size/Length Lights Do I Need?

For Christmas trees, as a general rule of thumb, you should be looking at around 100 lights per foot of tree e.g. a 5ft tree would need 500 LED lights. Obviously this can vary depending on the look you desire from your tree.

If you want it to be a magnificent centrepiece (think Rockefeller Centre Christmas Tree) then think about doubling the amount of lights from 100 lights per foot to 200 lights per foot.

If you plan on hanging your Christmas lights outside (or elsewhere in your home), we recommend that you measure the area you wish to hang lights from first and then choose a set of lights which will fill this space. It's important that you look at the 'lit length' as this is the amount of wiring with LED bulbs (i.e. not the lead wire).

String Fairy Lights

String Fairy Lights are probably what comes to mind when you think of fairy lights. As the name suggests, the LED lights are placed across a 'string' and are ideal for decorating Christmas trees but can also look great when placed down banisters or along the guttering of your home. They can also be hung around an indoor wall for a cute and cosy ambience. We offer a wide range of fairy lights in different designs and colours including clear cable and 'close set' - check them out here!

Cluster Lights

Cluster Fairy Lights have bulbs which are placed a lot closer together (ours are 1.25mm apart). They look great on larger Christmas trees or around windows, fireplaces, fencing and guttering. They will provide a brighter glow than string fairy lights of the same length as they have over 4 times more lights on the same amount of wiring. Browse our range here!

Icicle Lights

Icicle Fairy Lights are another winter classic. You will often see these hanging from the front of houses and garages. As the name suggests, they emulate the look of icicles by dangling smaller LED lit wires from the main wire to give a magical look. Browse our icicle fairy light range here!

Curtain Lights

Curtain Fairy Lights are ideal to hang from walls, fences and windows. They are similar to icicle lights except they drop down further to provide a jaw-dropping scene. Our Curtain lights are 3m x 3m and have 304 LED bulbs which can be set to 8 different lighting modes.

Warm White v Cool White v Multi-Coloured LEDs

Warm White LEDs provide a calm and cosy glow which are ideal for indoor decorative lighting and look great when wrapped around Christmas trees. They have a golden orangey-yellow glow and bring a much-needed warming vibe in the winter period.

Cool White LEDs are better suited to outdoor decorations. They bring a bright glow with elements of blue and white which results in a cold and icy feel. They look great when placed with blue, grey and silver colours.

Multi-Coloured LEDs are a Christmas classic and are sure to bring a nostalgic festive glow. The wide array of colours bring a playful energy to any room so are perfect for young families.
